Bahu-Rang
biography

Venice, CA.- based BAHU-RANG takes the unlikely and makes it as natural as a sunrise, the unexpected and makes you wonder why it was never tried before. And they do it all honestly and ingenuously. Mixing a global collection of instruments with a complex and poetic worldview wrapped in solidly structured songs, BAHU-RANG is that rarest of animals; an eccentric band that's as accessible as it is challenging.

Jo Pusateri

“We simply took the best of everybody’s individual talents and incorporated them into our sound,” says Jo Pusateri, BAHU’s principal singer and songwriter, describing the band’s trippy pop sound. “We’re almost R&B, but we’re not. Almost pop, but we’re not. Almost trip hop, but we’re not -- We don’t do it on purpose,” he finishes almost apologetically, but not.

Taking their name from a Ravi Shankar piece because the title had a tribal, mystical sound (it means “many colors”), and mixing diverse influences ranging from 70’s T.V. sountracks, Pink Floyd, 80’s Brit synth bands and Henry Mancini, BAHU builds songs by jamming on their broad collection of instruments until the right sound emerges. Pusateri constructs the highly rhythmic foundation with persuasive drums and percussion, electric piano, moogs, harmonium and other keyboards. Multi-instrumentalist Norda Mullen complements him with an assortment of flutes, panpipes, melodica & bass. On top of that , they both sing.

Norda Mullen

Live, the band presents an appealing mix of space-rock atmospherics and polyrhythmic grooves, and offer an intriguing visage on stage: three women, one man, a cornucopia of instruments, all of them equal partners in creating a completely unique aural experience.

Having several songs placed in films (Hour Glass dir. by & starring C.Thomas Howell; Telling You starring Jennifer Love Hewitt; among others), television (two featured songs on Dawson's Creek ) and a successful Budweiser radio spot, the band likes to continue making quality recordings rather than demos, releasing them on their own even while searching for a suitable record label/distributor.

Ultimately, BAHU-RANG is creating a place all their own. BAHU is an island unto itself in the very best sense, drawing inspiration from their own intuition and imagination, discovering their own glorious revelations. Or as BAHU sings themselves on Just Try To Walk, “It’s some kind of strange imagination / taking me high again.”

Pusateri and Mullen are both established session players in L.A. and have worked on hundreds of movie and television soundtracks, commercials and records. Currently they are working on a new CD (their second) and Mullen plays flute/guitar and sings with the Moody Blues on tour when she's not busy with Bahu-Rang. Look for her on the new Moody Blues album, December.
